New law supports development of e-commerce in Guatemala

The "Recognition of Electronic Communications and Signatures" Law that was approved and legalizes the recognition of electronic communications and signatures.

With the implementation of this new law, Guatemala will join El Salvador and Costa Rica, two other countries that have adopted similar laws.
The Chamber of Commerce has found legal support in the new law for its its electronic commerce support project being carried out with the aid of the IDB with the goal of helping small and medium companies to enter into the so called e-commerce.

Electronic signatures come into force in Guatemala

Transactions or electronic documents will be legally valid starting October 1.

This is in accordance with Decree 47-2008, the Law for the recognition of electronic communications and signatures that was published yesterday in the Diario de Centroamerica (Central American newspaper).

Electronic Signature to Begin on June 15 in Guatemala

Authorities of the Ministry of the Economy announced the date when the Electronic Signatures Registry (REF) will begin to operate.

Deputy Economy Minister Erasmo Velásquez stated that they will be publishing the regulations, which will give a legal base to the registry, in the coming days.

$58 million in e-commerce in Guatemala

Internet sales have increased in Guatemala, although only 3.3% of the populations makes purchases online.

Guatemalan internet users spend $58 million shopping online in 2007, according to a study on e-commerce (B2C) in Latin America presented by VISA and carried out by América Economía Intelligence.

E-Commerce Regulation in Honduras

August 2009

An Electronic Commerce Law project, recently introduced to Congress, aims to guarantee Internet transactions.

Among other things, the law intends to regulate electronic document and signatures, signature certification companies, accreditation processes and documents needing certification for acts and contracts.
