New Markets for Salvadoran Honey

Besides Germany, natural honey from El Salvador could enter this year the markets of Belgium, Armenia and Spain.

Data from the Central Reserve Bank (BCR) indicates that exports of honey to the three new markets represent 7.1% of total exports to date.

"Although it is a small percentage of all export earnings, it sets the tone in expanding destinations, since the German market has traditionally accounted for the Salvadoran product.

Proof of this is that to date, this country has exported honey worth $3.3 million, or 85.3% of the pie made up of the international sales of the agricultural product", reported

Pests and Climate Affect Honey Crop in Guatemala

Manufacturers reported a reduction of 70% compared to the previous harvest season and estimate a drop in exports this year.

AGEXPORT estimates a 40% decrease in the volume of honey projected for the current season.

85% of the total production is shipped abroad. The main buyers in Europe are the U.K., Germany, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Holland, Italy and France. In America, the top purchasers are the United States, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Honduras.

Opportunities for Honey in the EU

The entry into force of the Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union encourages projects to increase honey production in Nicaragua.

Currently production is less than 500 tonnes per year, equivalent to 0.09% of what was imported globally last year (518,818 tonnes).

Low export of Salvadoran honey to the EU

Honey production is facing several problems, and has therefore seen a reduction in exports to the European Union.

According to official data from 2003, they produced 2,304 metric tones of honey in the country. In 2007 it was at 44.5% less. Similarly, exports have shown the same tendency. In 2003 they exported 1,843 metric tones to Central America and Europe, but in 2007 it was at 946 metric tones (48.67% less).
