Guatemala: Wendy’s Invests $6.4 Million

The company plans to open 8 new restaurants until 2013 at $800.000 each.

Stephanía Calderón, Wendy’s marketing manager, explained that they expect to open two restaurants in 2010, one in September and the other by yearend.

Ramón Hernández, president of the Guatemalan Franchises Association, referred to Wendy’s expansion plans, stating that “in the food industry each brand has its own strategy. As an association, we have confirmed that fast food chains still have a lot of market to cover”.

Fast Food Still Booming

While Chili's and Buffalo Wild Wings open their first branches in Costa Rica, the established Applebee's, Subway, Quizno's, McDonald's, KFC and Teriyaki have increased their investments.

Before the end of the year, Hooters will open its fourth restaurant on Paseo Metropolis, in Cartago, east of San José, with an investment of $1 million.

Costa Rica: More and More Burgers

There are at least 15 Costa Rican restaurant chains where burgers are the highlight dish on the menu.

International brands include Mc'Donald's with its 50 stores, Burger King with 31 and Wendy's with 13 restaurants. Other fast food franchises with burgers on the menu are "Carl's Jr., which debuted in 2011 and has six locations, and Smashburger, which opened its first store in Lincoln Square, earlier this month."

More and More Places to Eat in Costa Rica

In the last two years the supply of fast food restaurants has doubled, and now oversupply is being noticed in a decline in sales, which have fallen by 10%.

According to Manuel Burgos, president of the Costa Rican Chamber of Restaurants and Related Businesses (Cacore), with the opening of new shopping centers such as Lincoln Plaza in Moravia, Paseo Metrópoli, in Cartago, and Plaza Tempo, in Escazu, at least 80 restaurants of this type have opened.
