China Certifies Beef from Costa Rica

Two Costa Rican meat processing plants have received authorization from the Chinese authorities to export beef to the Asian country, and another two received minimal observations.

China's support for the export of beef by the companies El Arreo y Visión Comercial was reported last week by the authorities of the National Health Service. Ligia Quirós, director of the department of the Ministry of Agriculture, and Andrei Barquero, Commercial Vision representative, confirmed the news.

According to, a Chinese sanitary mission visited Costa Rica in December. Among the requirements, is HACCT certification (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points). The mission also visited plants belonging to Coopemontecillos and GICO, which must comply with a few suggestions to improve.

Fernando Ocampo, Vice Minister of Foreign Trade, said the companies have already passed the Chinese monitoring and will make their first exports in the next few weeks.

The Republic of China and Costa Rica signed an FTA in 2010, which took effect last August.

Costa Rica Exports Meat to China

Between January and November 2014, after obtaining sanitary permits, two companies managed to export to beef to China for $9.1 million.

From a statement issued by the Livestock Development Corporation (Corfoga):

In one year, shipments of this product to China grew by 707.1%, making the country the third destination of our bovine meat exports.

Peru Mission Inspects Meat Plants in Costa Rica

Plants and establishments producing beef in Costa Rica, are being inspected as a requirement before the opening of the Peruvian market for this product.

From Monday 18 to Friday 22, the technical mission from the South American country, will be inspecting establishments such as Visión Comercial, Coopemontecillos, Ganaderos Industriales de Costa Rica and Frionet.

Costa Rican Meat Requests Access to China

Costa Rica's negotiators requested immediate, tariff free entrance for chicken, beef and pork.

The third round of talks between China and Costa Rica will take place in Liberia, in direct contact with those industries.

From June 15 – 19, a third round of negotiations for the FTA will take place in Liberia, Guanacaste. The setting will be used to show "Chinese entrepreneurs the development of tourism infrastructure and farm production of beef there."
