50 El Salvador exporters prepare to go to the EU

Europe is a very important market for the export sector, offering new opportunities for products already being sold there as well as for new export products.

The European Union represents a market of almost 500 million potential consumers, while its Gross Domestic Product is more than 13 trillion dollars. Income per capita there is about 30,000 dollars, according to data provided this week from the El Salvador Exporters Corporation.
In 2007 El Salvador's sales to the EU market were about 272 million dollars. The main products were tuna, coffee, cotton towels, sugar, ornamental plants, shoes, honey, handicrafts, gift products and some other food products. Agricultural products comprised three-quarters of total sales.
El Salvador's exporters' union reports that 50 businessmen will take part in the Fourth Round of Central America-EU trade talks that are about to get underway in Brussels.

Central America Splits EU Beef Quota in Equal Parts

Central America’s beef industry has distributed the quota of meat that can be sent tariff-free to the European Union equally among all countries.

The Central American Federation of the Beef Industry, meeting in Guatemala, established that each country will be allowed to ship 1,583 tons per year.

Europe aims for 90 percent tariff-free trade with Central America

The European Union expects Central America to phase out tariffs on 90 percent of its products under a proposed free trade agreement between the two regions.

But Karl-Friedrich Falkenberg, the EU's deputy director of foreign trade, said the proposal would be put on the table when the two sides meet in Lima at the summit of leaders of the EU, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Central America rejects conditions for trade alliance with Europe

Central America rejected the European Union's request to phase out 90 percent of its tariffs in exchange for the benefits of the EU's enhanced Generalised System of Preferences (GSP-plus).

At a meeting with Peter Mandelson, the EU's trade commissioner, Central American representatives insisted that GSP-plus should be offered unconditionally as the basis for negotiations on an association agreement between the two regions.
