The European Union represents a market of almost 500 million potential consumers, while its Gross Domestic Product is more than 13 trillion dollars. Income per capita there is about 30,000 dollars, according to data provided this week from the El Salvador Exporters Corporation.
The sector, which was ready to export 10,000 tonnes of sugar to the European Union, must wait two more months to do so.
In late June the Association Agreement between Central America and the European Union will be signed in Tegucigalpa, containing a section on trade which will take effect as soon as it is ratified by one of the governments of the region.
With the entry into force of the AA in August, 90% of Salvadoran products will be able to be sent to European Union countries duty free.
The Association Agreement with the EU was approved with no negative votes by the Salvadoran Legislative Assembly.
