38% Increase in Mortgage Loans in El Salvador

In February credit for the construction sector reported a growth of 38.22%.

According to the Salvadoran Chamber for the Construction Industry (Casalco), the industry obtained between the months of January and February about $79 million in loans to build and buy homes, representing an increase of 38.22% compared to the same period in 2011.

"Funding for construction totaled $23.07 million, 5.94% more than last year. Loans to purchase homes totaled $55.96 million, 58.08% more.

Agricultural infrastructure construction is the sector that showed the highest percentage growth, according to statistics from the report: 9,231.7%. In the first two months of this year, this sector received credit of $29.79 million compared to $320,000 in 2011," reported Elmundo.com.sv.

According to the Nicaraguan Chamber of Construction in the first six months of the year alone, there was a 10.5% increase in the sector.

"Benjamin Spears, president of the Nicaraguan Chamber of Construction (NCC), said that housing projects, especially in the social interest segment, are the main factor accounting for the growth.
